Understanding PPF Coverage Options

Paint Protection Film isn't an all-or-nothing proposition. There are multiple coverage levels, each designed for different needs and budgets. Let's break down your options from least to most coverage.

Coverage Level 1: Partial Front Kit

What's covered: Hood (partial), front bumper, mirror caps Cost range: $800-1,200 Best for: Budget-conscious owners who want basic protection

This is the entry-level PPF package. It covers the areas most likely to get hit by road debris on highway driving. The partial hood typically covers 18-24 inches from the leading edge.

Pros: Affordable, protects the most vulnerable areas Cons: Visible edge line on the hood, doesn't cover fenders or headlights

Coverage Level 2: Full Front Kit

What's covered: Full hood, front bumper, front fenders, mirror caps, headlights Cost range: $1,500-2,500 Best for: Most drivers — this is our most popular package

The full front kit is the sweet spot for most vehicle owners. It covers everything that faces oncoming road debris. No visible edge lines on the hood since the film wraps around the edges.

Pros: Complete front-end protection, no visible edges, covers headlights Cons: Sides and rear are unprotected

Coverage Level 3: Full Front + Rocker Panels

What's covered: Everything in Level 2 + rocker panels, A-pillars, rear bumper Cost range: $2,500-4,000 Best for: Drivers who want extended coverage without full body cost

This package adds protection to areas that get hit by side spray, shopping cart dings, and parking lot damage. The rocker panels are especially vulnerable to rock chips kicked up by your own tires.

Pros: Protects high-impact side areas, rear bumper coverage Cons: Doors and quarter panels still exposed

Coverage Level 4: Full Body Wrap

What's covered: Every painted surface on the vehicle Cost range: $5,000-10,000+ Best for: High-value vehicles, exotic cars, or anyone who wants total protection

The ultimate in paint protection. Every painted surface is covered in PPF, making your entire vehicle virtually immune to rock chips, scratches, and environmental damage.

Pros: Total protection, best resale value preservation, peace of mind Cons: Highest cost, longer installation time (3-5 days)

How to Decide: Key Questions

1. What's your vehicle worth?

As a general rule, the more valuable your vehicle, the more coverage makes sense. For a $100,000+ vehicle, full body PPF is almost always recommended. For a $30,000 daily driver, a full front kit is usually the sweet spot.

2. How do you drive?

  • Mostly highway: Full front kit minimum (rock chip exposure)
  • Mostly city: Rocker panels and bumpers are more important
  • Mixed: Full front + rockers is ideal

3. How long will you keep the vehicle?

  • Leasing (2-3 years): Full front kit to maintain return condition
  • Keeping 5+ years: Consider full body for long-term preservation
  • Planning to sell soon: Full front kit maximizes ROI

4. What's your budget?

Be honest about what you can afford. A well-installed full front kit provides 80% of the protection at 30% of the cost of a full body wrap. It's better to get quality PPF on the front than cheap film everywhere.

The Film Matters as Much as the Coverage

Not all PPF is created equal. At Chicago Auto Spa, we exclusively use premium films from XPEL and 3M:

  • XPEL Ultimate Plus: Industry-leading self-healing, 10-year warranty
  • 3M Scotchgard Pro: Excellent clarity, strong warranty
  • XPEL Stealth: Matte finish option for satin/matte vehicles

Cheaper films may save money upfront but often yellow, peel, or fail to self-heal within a few years. The film quality and installation expertise are what make the difference between a great PPF job and a disappointing one.

Our Installation Process

Regardless of coverage level, every PPF installation at Chicago Auto Spa follows the same meticulous process:

  1. Vehicle inspection — We document existing damage and set expectations
  2. Thorough wash and decontamination — Clean surface is essential for adhesion
  3. Paint correction — We fix imperfections before they're sealed under the film
  4. Computer-cut patterns — Precision-cut film using DAP (Design Access Program)
  5. Expert installation — Our certified installers apply each panel by hand
  6. Quality inspection — Every edge, seam, and corner is checked
  7. 48-hour cure — We keep your vehicle in our climate-controlled shop
